This is a revival of a favorite class that Body Moves had for years. Starting May 29, every Friday, from 4:15PM to 5:30PM, we will move to meditative music. This is mostly an inner dance experience. It’s an opportunity to dive deep with other kindred spirits.

“It was one of our favorite classes at Body Moves.” Jerry and Georgianna

Each class session costs $7
The goal is to have the class be a collective. If you do the music for a class session, you get 2 classes free!

April 24, 2009 at 7:30PM

John William Johnson will lead a medicine bowl meditation to ground us and bring you home to your body.

Then John Conley will lead Kirtan, with Chelsea and her wonderful voice supporting our response.

A donation of $8-15 is requested. A portion of the proceeds will go to Jesse, fellow dancer Joe McLoughlin’s son, who is paralyzed from the neck down.

More details

——

My friend Chelsea Bennett and I will be hosting a kirtan at Oasis Healing Arts on Friday, April 24th. John William Johnson is graciously hosting us the night before the dance with Vinn Marti.

I will be selling my new CD, “Bow to the Inner Heart,” which is also available online at CD Baby. I plan to donate 30% of CD sales to Jesse McLoughlin, a young man who is paralyzed from the neck down. He was shot by a hunter about a year ago. As Jesse struggles with tasks I take for granted – breathing, for example – his bravery humbles me and puts my own small problems in perspective. His father, Joe, one of my heroes, is a member of our dance family. You have seen him at the Conduit, or SomaSpace with Paula, or at Sacred Circle. Also, the CD will be sold for a donation. If you have $2, give that. If you have $20, give that. For more details about the kirtan, see below.

You may not know Chelsea. But I do. She has a beautiful voice and she loves to chant. She is kind, gentle, funny, and gorgeous. Actually she reminds me of me! Our friend, Lala Lenore, who I imagine is chanting in Mexico where she is studying weaving and sun bathing, introduced us formally. We had met at the Conduit, but I kept forgetting her name. Anyway, after Lenore introduced us, and I remembered her name, it was “chant” at first sight. This will be Chelsea’s first kirtan on the keyboard side of the harmonium. So, please, if you can, come and support all of us – Jesse and his family, me, Lenore in spirit, and what’s her name.

Bow to the Inner Heart was recorded live at Centered City Yoga, owned by the beautiful, wise, witty, and hot D’ana Baptiste, in Salt Lake City. We had a wonderful and joyous time at that kirtan, and I’d like to think that the joy comes through on the CD.

Vinn Marti of Soul Motion will be teaching a Soul Motion workshop on April 25, 2009 at the Oasis Healing Arts Center. The event will last from 11:00AM to 3:00PM. Doors will open at 10:30AM.

Come and join Vinn as we step away from the usual and together let’s create an Oasis of inquiry and invention through movement, stillness, music, and silence.

The whole purpose of the class is to drop into an experience that is centered in your body. You have a chance to experience yourself in a safe and nurturing environment, with no need to perform to look good, or to impress anyone.

Designed by Vinn Martí, Soul Motion is a practice of paying attention and waking up, together, to the physical reality of a body in motion, and the spiritual reality of the Presence that moves us. It’s a dance at the crossroads of the vertical drop into self and the horizontal extension toward another. There are no steps to follow, just the whimsical path of endless self discovery – down from the mind’s conversations of past and future into the raw, messy and miraculous event of this body sweating, tensing, opening, living and dying: now. Soul Motion offers a key to spontaneous expression, a ticket to the Mystery, and release into freedom.

Space is limited to 50 participants. Cost of the event is only $75, but space is limited, so don’t delay. Register now!

John Teaching in MexicoI just came back from Troncones, Mexico. I was down there working at the Present Moment Retreat Center. Picture giving massages 30 yards from the ocean, teaching yoga and dance outside and watching pelicans sweeping their wings along the ocean waves.

I realized this trip that my perfect vacation actually has a certain amount of service. I don’t like just being a tourist. I do love foreign soil, sunny climates and kindred spirits, but I want share my knowledge and experience with the people.

John Teaching in MexicoI met some really special people. CJ is the owner and visionary at the center. Natalie was very popular doing Thai Massaage. She would come in every afternoon with bruises on her body and a big smile saying, “Look! I just chipped my tooth! It’s my first surfing injury. Isn’t that cool?”

I look forward to going to this wonderful place again next winter. Why spend it in rainy Portland when I can be in the sun and teach what I love?

Welcome to the year of the Ox! Today, Monday, January 26, 2009,  is the first day of the Chinese New Year. Yesterday was a big day to plan and prepare for the new year. Opening all windows and doors, cleaning out all the corners and dust spots and rolling 9 fresh oranges over the hearth are some things we did here.

The Year of the Ox is about persistence, moving along in a deliberate manner. In this year of recession, it’s right in line with what is needed. Not a time to be taking risks, or starting new things. Take some time to see what you want to let go of, and what you want to bring in.

Just got back from a 10-day certification training with Vinn Marti at the Madrona MindBody Institute in Port Townsend, Washington. What an incredible space! It’s situated in an old fort (Fort Worden) that has been converted into a lifelong learning institute.

There were 26 of us practicing our skills at teaching Soul Motion. View the video.

Out of that training, 6 of us have been authorized to teach classes and be mentored by Vinn and Zuza.

A weekly Soul Motion class on Thursdays, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM will start in February at the Oasis. Vinn is an artist, and his work is constantly changing, so my class will be based on the most current version of Soul Motion. The cost is $10 per class.

I’m also going to teach a Renewal Class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM. I’m very excited about this class. It’s an opportunity for you to try out my favorite products for renewing and restoring your body. The cost is $10 per class.

Currently, I teach Couples Massage at Portland Community College. I’m going to supplement those teachings with a class in my space. The advantage will be more freedom, a better setting to explore the work and massage tables to work on. The cost is $95 per couple which includes a free bottle of massage oil and instructions for doing massage at home.

On Wednesday nights, beginning February 4th, I will have Movie Night from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. I’ll announce my film choice soon. The cost is $5.

Also, I’ll hold free Brown Bag Lunch meetings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week. Tuesdays will be a discussion about Health and Well Being and Wednesdays will be about building your business.

On February 11th, I will have a Couples Massage night from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. This is a great way to learn how to give and receive massage. The cost is $10.

Feel free to stop by and see the beautiful space I created. There are still opportunities for you to participate, as a volunteer to trade for classes, or to rent space. We are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Wow, 2009 is here! I was hoping to start our classes today, but I have 3 weeks of gigs away from Portland, so it looks like we will be easing into the New Year. So far, the Renewal Class is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 8:45 AM to 9:45 AM. Then, we have a tentative Yoga class at 10 AM, taught by Susan Banyas. There is a sacred dance community meeting coming up. I am also scheduled to teach Massage classes at PSU. Please view our calendar for the most up to date schedule of classes and events.

We have a beautiful screen and projector installed in the studio. I am looking forward to showing videos and having discussion groups afterwards.

Come by and check out the Oasis Healing Arts Center space. “I feel like I’m back in New York City when I walk in,” said Nicole, my Anusara Yoga teacher colleague. Joanne Doussea, a healer visiting from Los Angeles said, “Your meeting room is a true work of art. You did a great job, John.”
